Lesson title: Figurative Language Keynote

Brief lesson/unit Summary/Description
Students will make a Keynote/PowerPoint presentation of examples of figurative language as well as a response to a poem of their choice from the poems we read in class.

c. Evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on the appropriateness to specific tasks

Integration into NLMUSD Curriculum Maps (If applicable in Language arts or Math)
This unit integrates into unit 3 of the NLMUSD ELA Meshed unit for Special Ed Middle School (6-8)
Students will understand (lesson/unit objectives):
· Common figurative language such as metaphors, similes, personification, onomatopoeia and hyperbole.
· Literary devices such as alliteration.
· How to write a simple response to poetry.
Essential Questions to guide this unit/lesson and focus teaching and learning:
What are some common literary devices used in poetry? What do they mean?
Technology & Web 2.0 resources needed (hardware and software, websites)
Computer or iPad to run Keynote or Powerpoint, internet browser. Recommended website: Buzzle.com, google.com, Dropbox.com (for cloze for scaffolding poetry response.
Procedure (learning activities)/ lessons of unit
Students were given template to fill in for presentation. Students were instructed to look for each figure of speech using it as a keyword as well as “kids” and “examples.” Students were instructed on how to access Dropbox.com to access the cloze-style scaffolding for the poetry response.
Assessment Method
Presentations were assessed for correct identification of samples of each kind of figurative language and completeness of the final poetry response. Extra credit was encouraged and given for meanings to the metaphors, similes, personification, and hyperbole.
